It has the highest fire-resistance classification (class) according to EN 13501-1: 2007 - A1: 2009.

In most cases, the concrete does not require no protection fire additional due to its fire resistance built-in. It is a material not fuel and has a low speed of transfer of heat. The concrete ensures that the structural integrity remains, the partitioning of the fire is not compromised and you may rely on shielding them from the heat. Because of the material properties that are intrinsic to the concrete, it can be used to minimize the risk of fire due to the lower initial cost, while requiring the minimum in terms of ongoing maintenance.

Concrete as a material

The concrete does not burn – cannot be ignited and it does not emit toxic fumes if hit by a fire. It is shown that the concrete has a high degree of resistance to fire and, in the majority of applications, can be described as fire-proof. This excellent performance is due, mainly, to the constituent materials of the concrete (cement and aggregates) that, when combined chemically to the inside of the concrete, forming a material substantially inert and, important for the design of fire-fighting, a the thermal conductivity of the relatively low. This is the slow speed of the conductivity (heat transfer) that allows the concrete to act as a shield fire effective not only between adjacent spaces, but also to protect themselves from the fire damage.

Concrete structures

Concrete structures behave well in front of the fire. This is due to the combination of property intrinsic of the concrete itself, together with the appropriate design of the structural elements to provide fire performance is required and the design of the overall structure to ensure the robustness.
