Aggregates occupy 60 to 80% of the total volume of concrete. 

The aggregate may be natural, manufactured or recycled. Includes gravel, crushed stone, sand, slag, concrete, recycled aggregates and geo-synthetic. For a good concrete mix, aggregates need to be particles that are clean, hard, strong, free of chemicals absorbed or coatings of clay and other materials for purposes that could cause the deterioration of the concrete.

At the most general level, the aggregates are available in two varieties:

• Fine aggregate
• Coarse aggregate

The Aggregates thin

Aggregates purpose are generally sand or crushed stone with a diameter less than 9,55 mm. The sand natural is generally used as fine aggregate; the stone powder and clay they are cataloged also in this category. The purpose of the fine aggregate is to fill the voids in the aggregate crude and act as an agent of workability.

The aggregates large

Aggregates coarse the particles exceed 9.5 mm. The usual range used is between 9.5 mm and 37.5 mm in diameter. In general, the most common size of the aggregate used in the construction 20 mm. A larger size, 40 mm, it is more common in concrete mass. The aggregates with a diameter greater reduce the amount of cement and water necessary.

When the aggregate is sieved through a sieve of 4,75 mm, the aggregate retained is called coarse mineral aggregate. Gravel, pebbles and boulders fall into this category. The aggregate of maximum size that is used can be depend on certain conditions. In general, for the high-strength concrete it is used in an aggregate size 40mm used for resistors normal size 20 mm.
